Registers of Arabic Literary History
The article explores the history of Arabic literature and the impact of globalization on its historiography. The author contends that Arab scholars, poets, and critics of the early Islamic period were concerned with literature as a distinct form of communication. Other topics include literary canons as histories, Arab authors, the geography and spatial boundaries of Islamic civilization, and imperialism.

The Other Eye : Sight and Insight in Arabic Classical Dream Literature
The famous and vast body of Arab dream literature offers a very rich historical and systematic source for the study of indices, symbols and other visual indicators. While this oneiric literature has always attracted much attention to this world of dreams, their visual dimension has remained rather neglected. This article looks at one of the fundamental elements of the dream, namely its transposition from the visual to the oral and/or written, the only way, as J.C. Schmitt has underlined, by which we can know of dreams. Thus at the centre of this article stands the relationship between the visual aspect of the dream and the forms of its non-visual representation.

From Heaven to Dust : Metamorphosis of the Book in Pre-modern Arab Culture
Few objects in pre-modern Arab Culture have generated stronger expressions of veneration than the book, sacred and profane. From the idea of the Book, the immaterial yet physical presence of the Qur'an, to its presence for the book culture—of commentary, of traditions and encyclopedias— and of Islamic universities and private libraries, the book played a significant role in the transmission and dissemination of knowledge. As an object in daily life it triggered a code of conduct vis-à-vis its special status. If the 'aura' around the manuscript book delayed the introduction of the printing press to early eighteenth century, the large number of books still written and copied defies the assumption of the printed book as the chief means of dissemination of knowledge. The moveable print set a caesura in the life of the book.
