CEU Summer University 2010 Opening

The 15th annual Summer University (SUN) was officially opened on July 5, 2010 by Liviu Matei, Chief Operating Officer and Professor, Department of Public Policy. This year SUN offers 19 courses, bringing together 580 participants from 89 countries.

CEU Celebrates 19th Graduation Ceremony and the Awarding of the CEU Open Society Prize

More than 600 Central European University students from more than 70 countries, received their degrees, Master’s or Doctoral, at this year’s Graduation Ceremony, the university’s 19th. They joined a body of some 8,500 CEU alumni who are beginning to distinguish themselves as the region’s, and beyond, next generation of leaders and scholars.

Comparative Studies of Communism: New Perspectives

On May 27, the Department of History and Pasts Inc., Center for Historical Studies, organized the Third Annual Conference of the OSI-CEU Comparative History Project. The conference was sponsored by the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute (OSI). John Shattuck, CEU President and Rector, delivered the welcome address, while Constantin Iordachi, Head, Department of History, CEU acted as chair of the event and gave the introduction to the discussion.

Developmental continuities and core mechanisms in social and moral cognition

In his talk on June 2, 2010, Prof Luca Surian (University of Trento, Italy) presented the results of some recent experiments he and his research team carried out to investigate causal perception, mental state attribution, and social evaluation skills in infants, children and adults. They assessed causal perception using the habituation/dishabituation paradigm by presenting 6-month-olds with simple events involving two agents that reacted at a distance.

Reinventing EU Enlargement: Macedonia and the Western Balkans

On 31 May HE Darko Angelov, Ambassador to Hungary, Republic of Macedonia, who is also a CEU alumnus (IRES 04), delivered a public lecture entitled “Reinventing EU Enlargement: Macedonia and the Western Balkans Integrating Europe’s Inner Courtyard”. HIS audience included CEU faculty members, students, representatives of the diplomatic corps and members of various international organizations. The event was organized by the Department of Political Science.  

News Literacy in a Digital Age

The Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) and the Human Rights Student Initiative (HRSI) on 25 May organized a public lecture by Richard Hornik entitled “News Literacy in a Digital Age: Stony Brook University's Innovative Curriculum to Develop the Critical Thinking Skills of Young News Consumers”.

Gender, Math and Science

In 2005 Harvard President Lawrence Summers suggested that there might be an innate difference between men and women, explaining why so few women succeed in science and mathematics careers. However, Elizabeth Spelke, Marshall L. Berkman Professor, Psychology, Harvard University, who delivered a lecture at CEU on May 13, entitled “Gender, Math and Science: Perspectives from Cognitive Development” gave an alternative explanation.

Reflections on the Arab World in a Global Context: Past, Present and Future

On May 11, CEU President and Rector John Shattuck hosted former ambassador of the League of Arab States Clovis Maksoud for a public lecture entitled “Reflections on the Arab World in a Global Context: Past, Present and Future”. The event was attended by CEU students and faculty, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Hungarian media. The public discussion following the lecture was chaired by CEU University Professor Aziz Al-Azmeh.
