The course concentrates on a wide range of policies areas that are conducive for economic and political development. The first part of the course will focus on political, international and institutional causes of economic development. The subsequent sessions will treat the role of governance strutures, international trade, macroeconomic policy, monetary and central bank policy, management of resource booms, demography, inequality and policies of poverty reduction, human capital formation, and structural transformation and industrial policies. The seminar will put an emphasis on empirical research by encouraging students to elaborate selective public policy case studies for development.
