Monterescu to Succeed Fabiani as Director of Doctoral Program in Sociology

Daniel Monterescu, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, succeeded Professor Jean-Luis Fabiani on Jan. 1 as director of the doctoral program.

Steinorth Named Director of Doctoral Program in Legal Studies

Charlotte Steinorth, assistant professor in the Department of Legal Studies, is replacing Professor Tibor Tajti temporarily as director of the doctoral (S.J.D.) program in the Legal Studies Department while Tajti is on sabbatical from Jan.1 through June 30.

Career Services Publishes Resume Book Linking Students and Employers

The annual CEU Resume Book, which includes profiles of more than 300 CEU students this year, has been offered to over 1,000 local and international employers. The online portal, http://alumnicareer.ceu.hu/career/students/resumebook, is a useful tool for increasing student visibility in the job marketplace and matching students with potential employers. The portal received several hundred visits in its first week alone, suggesting a high level of interest from employers.

Governance Expert Cristina Corduneanu-Huci Joins SPP Faculty

Cristina Corduneanu-Huci, a governance specialist whose research focuses on the political economy of development, politics in non-democracies and government transparency, will join the faculty of CEU's new School of Public Policy this summer.

PhD Students Win Academic Awards

CEU has announced the winners of its Award for Advanced Doctoral Students, given to outstanding students usually in the third year of PhD study, and the Academic Achievement Award for First-Year Doctoral Students, rewarding outstanding performance in coursework and comprehensive exams. Open Society Archives Collects and Shares on a Grand Scale

Open Society Archives is participating in a large-scale digital archival project with 11 other European social history institutions, entitled the Heritage of the People's Europe (HOPE, http://www.peoplesheritage.eu/). As part of this project, OSA has put 80,128 documents online.

Emel Akcali Awarded CEU-IAS Faculty Fellowship

Emel Akcali, assistant professor in the Department of International Relations and European Studies, was awarded the Faculty Fellowship by the Institute for Advanced Study for the fall semester 2013/14.

Choi-Fitzpatrick Joins Founding Faculty of CEU’s School of Public Policy

Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, a political sociologist whose work focuses on social movements and human rights, will join CEU’s new School of Public Policy as assistant professor in summer 2013. His current research, funded by the National Science Foundation, explores the impact of social movements on human rights violators in India, particularly slaveholders engaged in contemporary forms of slavery.

Robert Templer Joins CEU School of Public Policy Faculty

Robert Templer will join the faculty of CEU’s School of Public Policy, bringing 20 years of experience in public policy and conflict issues to his new role as a professor of practice.

Philip Howard Joins CEU School of Public Policy Faculty

Philip N. Howard, a prominent commentator on global media policy issues, will join the CEU School of Public Policy as a professor of media and communication policy and governance. Howard is currently a professor of communication, information and international studies at the University of Washington and a fellow at Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Howard’s latest book, “Democracy's Fourth Wave? Digital Media and the Arab Spring” is slated for publication by Oxford University Press this year. Howard’s writings appear at http://philhoward.org.
