Delivering a guest lecture at Central European University, US federal judge Nancy Gertner discussed her own background as a defender of civil rights for women and minorities. Nominated to the federal bench in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, Judge Gertner has ruled on a variety of issues regarding civil rights.

She told a packed room at CEU about how seemingly neutral laws can have adverse effects on different groups, but also how laws that make room for difference can often also cause harm. Her memoir, "In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate," is set for release in April 2011.
